A plumber is a skilled tradesperson responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining systems used for water, sewage, and heating in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. Plumbers work with pipes, fittings, valves, and fixtures, ensuring that these systems function properly and safely. Their work includes installing plumbing systems for new buildings, remodeling existing plumbing systems, and repairing broken pipes or fixtures, often in emergency situations. They are also responsible for diagnosing plumbing issues, such as leaks, blockages, or low water pressure, and recommending appropriate solutions to fix these problems.
In addition to repair and installation tasks, plumbers are involved in regular maintenance to prevent future issues. This might involve cleaning drains, inspecting pipes for signs of wear or corrosion, and ensuring that water heaters, faucets, and toilets are functioning efficiently. Plumbers are knowledgeable about local building codes and regulations, ensuring that all plumbing work is up to code and safe for use. They may also work closely with other professionals, such as contractors or electricians, on large-scale construction or renovation projects to ensure that plumbing systems are integrated properly with other utilities.

The job often requires physical dexterity, as plumbers work in tight or awkward spaces, and the ability to work with a variety of tools, from wrenches and pipe cutters to more specialized equipment like pipe locators. Strong communication skills are also important, as plumbers must interact with clients, provide estimates, explain repairs, and ensure that all work is completed to the customer’s satisfaction.
